Village Library Goes Virtual and Helps Students Succeed

2021-02-10T14:11:45-06:00

Like so many mothers and fathers in our community, Sandra had to make some difficult choices when the pandemic hit last year. She had to quit her job to stay home with her children and she struggled with the thought that her limited English would keep her from helping her children with their homework. When Sandra spoke with a reporter from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram last month, she expressed just how thankful she is for the Village Library after school tutoring program. The kids attend tutoring sessions online three times per week. Their grades are improving, and the kids look forward

Village Library Tutoring Has Gone Virtual

2020-04-29T10:30:39-05:00

Tutoring at the Village Library has gone virtual. Since March 13th HEB schools have been closed, but the homework doesn’t stop, and neither have our tutors. For the last two weeks tutoring has been happening over Zoom Meetings, and it has been a great success. Algebra tutoring is going especially well since students are able to share their screens with the tutors. The tutors can then walk the student through solving the problems step by step. Other subjects can be challenging online, but our amazing volunteers are creative and they are coming up with solutions. Lola Nelson-Spay, Director of Student Enrichment,

Young Student Brings Birthday Fun

2020-02-06T10:53:14-06:00

Our friend Ella is a young lady with a very big heart. She began making birthday boxes as a way to volunteer. “I started volunteering because of my participation in pageants,” Ella said. “I had to have volunteer hours, but as a six-year-old it was very hard for me and my mom to find things that I was able to do.” Ella puts together boxes full of everything someone would need to throw a birthday party for their child. Things like cake mix, icing, decorations, little games, and even a birthday button. “When I was volunteering at different shelters

Village Library Students Receive Recognition From Duke University

2020-02-06T10:54:00-06:00

This school year, two of our Village Library students were selected for the Duke University Talent Identification Program! In order to be chosen for the program, students must test above a 95% on their STAAR test in either reading or math. Some of the benefits include the opportunity to take the SAT test as a 7th grader and they also get information about camps and opportunities for gifted students. These amazing 7th grade students joined the Village Library program with a severe academic need, so this is truly a great honor and a testament to their hard work. The volunteers

Visit our Little Free Library!

2019-10-15T22:49:57-05:00

Looking for a good book? Visit our Little Free Library! Each year, members of the HEB Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Class carry out a community service project. This year's project was to build and deploy six Little Free Libraries at non-profits throughout the HEB community. Mission Central was thrilled to be chosen as a library location. Artist Teal Suns of Central Arts Bedford designed and painted our "Community Cubby" which includes a picture of a family reading together as they are encompassed by their encouraging neighbors. The library is located at our Community Resource Center at 740 East Pipeline
